I know I am only one of hundreds of people whose life has been touched by Sabrina. I know I am only one of the many students who have sought to become a teacher, passed through the doors in Phelps, and have been welcomed and inspired by Sabrina. One of the many who have laughed with her, who have smiled through tears because of her wisdom and compassion, and who have been guided and have grown under her awesome wings.
I remember early on in the teaching program, when we first began to know Sabrina, she was passing out name cards, and I was so sure she wouldn't remember my name... people rarely do. I bet my table-mates she wouldn't, I was so sure. When she stood behind me and placed my name card in front of me on the table (even when I shared my name with another student!) my jaw literally dropped. As she walked away, not knowing the effect of her actions, I watched her leave and knew in that moment I had just encountered a different brand of teacher.
In April, when my life was a rush of chaos, I had an overdue paper and I had missed one of her classes. She not only noticed, but e-mailed me to ask if everything was alright. Again, I was in awe. She, who does so much, who is so driven, on a million missions, not to mention the hundreds of papers she was grading, noticed my absence. I was moved, in response, to tell her how much her individualized attention meant, especially to someone who was accustomed to being overlooked. She responded:
Caren,
Thank you for your email. It sounds as if it's definitely been a "rough" few weeks and you needed to "escape" for a few hours. Please know that you and your health (in all if its forms) come first. I think that we tend to lose sight of that sometimes, especially in
this program.
I hope that you take time to do some writing and painting on this gorgeous weekend (It was quite evident to me after reading the book you
created for your word analysis lesson that you have a gift). If it means putting off SDAIE for a couple more days, that is okay with me.
I just wanted to be sure that you were okay. The assignment can come in when you have it done.
Take care,
Sabrina

From the moment she made my jaw drop in awe as she placed my name card in front of me, to the moment she went out of her way to touch my arm at graduation as I walked back up that aisle, and even now, as I write this and think of her through tears, I knew and know... Sabrina is/was an awe-inspiring person of great strength, wit, compassion, drive, and intelligence whose words and actions made everyone sit up a little straighter, listen a little more closely, and strive to live up to all that she expected us to be. As I cry and grieve for the loss of such an incredible teacher and mentor, I have an inexplicable peace in my heart, knowing what an amazing person she was, how many people she touched, and that she lived her life as a person should... walking that talk and changing the world for the better. I am grateful and honored to have known her, even for the short time I have, and I will remember her always.

As most people have already said, there are not enough words to describe Sabrina. As a Special Education credential student last year, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to take one class from Sabrina. It was the class that I looked forward to the most. I saved every bit of information that she passed out. I looked forward to her reading a story each week, so I could take it back to my own children and try to reproduce the magic that she had. Since that class, I stayed in contact with Sabrina. She has gone out of her way to help me with a variety of things... from studying for the RICA to choosing a school for my daughter to attend. Sabrina was such a wonderful person. I am so glad that I was lucky enough to have crossed paths with her. To Malaya, your mother was such an inspiration to so many people. I know that she has passed on a wealth of knowledge to you. I can't wait to hear of the wonderful things that you will accomplish in your life!

I first met Sabrina at Aliso School in Carpinteria when I went to work there as the Multimedia Technician. Malaya was a first grader, and each morning and afternoon that she was able to, Sabrina would be there to drop her off or pick her up. She always took the time to chat with staff members and other moms, and I was amazed by her upbeat attitude. I had no idea at that time about her degrees and achievements, but I was impressed with her kindness and caring. Later she talked with me about one of her great passions, children's literature, helping to guide me as I selected books to purchase for the library. Even student teachers who passed through our school brought with them suggestions of can't-miss books! As I read the acceptance speech that she gave last year when she was honored as an outstanding U.C.S.B. alumnus I was especially moved by her words about her grandmother, especially when I remember her saying something very similar about one of her students with whom I am acquainted. She was passionate, outspoken, direct, kind, loving, inspiring, dedicated and totally amazing! Hopefully we can all honor her memory by making a positive difference wherever and whenever we can.

I have the great privilage and pleasure to have known Sabrina both on personal and professional level. As the "adopted" brother of Herb, I was honored to be one of the groomsmen at their wedding. However before the wedding I had several opportunities to "hang out" with Herb and Sabrina. From the very first time, I knew Sabrina was a very unique and special person. Her love of life and the joy simple things bring was refreshing. Herb was truly a blessed guy. As I got to know more of Sabrina, I found that we were both Educators. As High School Counselor, Site Principal and District Administrator, Sabrina and I have numerous conversation about public education and service to students. Her passion was incredible! You could see that in her conversation, her entire heart and soul was behind her words. I was always impressed with her committment and dedication to ensuring that her students both in K12 and college level, received the most enriching learning experience they could and encouraged them to continue to achieve. Sabrina is truely the "Teacher Model" and exemplifies what it takes to ensure all students achieve. I will always be in awe of Sabrina's heart and soul passion for teaching and learning.

"Sabrina, the sharing of your love and passion has really changed the world..."

Herb and Malaya please know that thoughts and prayers are with you and that Sabrina will always be close at Heart.

With Love and Aloha,

I am living in Spain right now and have just received the sad news. I searched google to try to find a way to correspond with someone so that I could let those who were closest to her know how much I (we all) will miss her. I came across this site and I am so happy that I can tell all her family and friends in my own words what she has meant to me.
I was a student of Sabrina at UCSB back in 1999 and have continued to be a student of hers ever since. I had the privelege of working with her after I had entered the profession of teaching as she spent many selfless hours volunteering at Aliso school where I worked. The things she has taught me and the ideas she has shared with me have and will always guide me as I teach and live. Although Sabrina is no longer physically with us, her energy and enthusiasm that she has devoted to each of her students will continue to be passed on to their students year after year. She has left behind one of the most valuable and precious gifts anyone can give. Hope.
I feel so fortunate to have had Sabrina as a teacher, a mentor, and a friend. I will try to live up to the high standards that she has held for all her students. Today I recently revisited a letter of recommendation that I had asked Sabrina to write for me. I must have caught her on a good day because she wrote such beautiful and amazing things. Now my life goal will be to make those things she wrote in that letter true. I don´t know if she ever realized the power her words, feedback, and praise had on her students. She was so highly respected and loved by anyone who knew her. She will live on and she will continue to teach through all of those she has inspired during her life.

Sabrina was my greatest role model, mentor and friend while I was working towards my teaching credential a few years ago at UCSB. I never even knew she was sick. I heard the devestating news on the TV when I got home from dinner last Friday night. Saturday June 18th was my birthday and I was very confused about how I could celebrate my life when my dear friend had just lost hers. It didn't seem right. After some long thought and a call to my dad, I knew what I had to do. That day I did not celebrate my birthday; I celebrated Sabrina's life and the small piece of it I got to share with her and the little bit of her I got to know. That is what still lives on and I will continue to fight for the rights of our English Language Learners and remember what I learned from Sabrina and use it to drive my instruction to help the thousands of students who need us, who need her. It was such a shock to me to hear of her death I am still trying to deal with it. I don't understand why things like this happen to the wrong people....
One lesson I learned was that no matter what we are going through personally, we must come through for our kids. Sabrina NEVER failed to do that and indirectly through her I have learned that lesson. I always knew she was a strong woman, but now I really know how strong she was. Her classes at UCSB were my favorite, I called her at home for help, I went to her office over and over. I could not get enough of her and now she is gone. The only thing I can do is what she would want me to do- keep living her dream. I know she is in a safe place now and she is finally pain free. I hope she can see us all and watch her daughter grow up, and see what a difference she made during her short time with us; not many people can do so much. Sabrina if you can hear me, I love you and you made a great difference in my life and I am sorry I never got to tell you. I will never forget.
Love to your family and you,
Kimberly Staples

To Malaya:
You will live on through your mother's legacy. She was an amazing woman. You are a lucky young lady to have had such a wonderful mother in your life. Remember the good times, it is okay to cry, and know that there are hundreds of people, probably thousands, that she touched in her own personal way, that none of us will ever forget. Maybe one day you too will follow in her footsteps. I know she is still protecting you and watching over you now, and she doesn't hurt anymore. You were her shinning star, there wasn't a day in class that went by that she did not bring you up in someway, with that beautiful smile of hers! You are so lucky---do not ever forget how much she loves you!!

Just want to take a moment to thank Sabrina for inspiring me in my work. The last time we spoke we talked for an hour when I was working in Carpinteria. Talking about what is right and wrong with schools and what needed to change. I just want to say that what I thought was a quick "Hi, How are you?" turned into inspirational journey to a common passion, children and schooling. But, that is the way that I remeber her most, casual, friendly, but with a drive to change schooling so that they were places that were better for children and families. My thoughts and spirit are with you and your family.

I had the privilege of working with Sabrina for several years at Cleveland School. Her enthusiasm for teaching was contagious and her passion for bilingual education was unwavering. Our conversations about bilingual education always left me filled with hope and ready to go back into the classroom again. She expected the best of colleagues and students, and always gave the best of herself to us.

Sabrina and I used to laugh about our inhalers and our latest drugs; hers for her illness and mine for allergies and asthma. Her enthusiasm for life kept her going even when her illness played havoc with her body. Her never give up attitude was an inspiration.

We in education have lost a passionate teacher and colleague, but those of us who called her friend have lost a part of our heart.

Herb and Malaya you are in my thoughts and prayers. I can’t even imagine your sorrow. Just know that Sabrina’s passion for education lives on in her students and colleagues; for she truly touched the future.

Much love to you both.

No words can match what a powerful impact Sabrina and Malaya Tuyay have had in my life. I will never forget what a nervous wreck I was when I discovered Malaya would be a student in my first student teaching placement four years ago. I had only known Sabrina as an instructor for one class, and I knew she meant business! I wanted to live up to the ideals she had not only for the classroom, but more importantly for her daughter, her shining star. That placement turned out to hold the most awe inspiring teaching moments for me thanks to both Sabrina and Malaya.

Thanks to Sabrina for always reminding me to listen and to ask hard questions, because of this I have continued to grow as a teacher, but more importantly as a human being. Thanks to Malaya for all the smiles and hugs and for reminding me how precious learning and teaching can be. I love you both so much and will always hold you in my heart.

I had the great privilege of being one of Sabrina's students in various classes taken at the TEP at UCSB in 2002-2003. I do not have words to describe the way Sabrina has impacted my life as a student, a teacher, and as an advocate for kids. Her compassion to see kids in a classroom as somebody else's children, and not merely just a classroom full of students made me realize how personal the teaching profession really was. With that perspective, Sabrina has shaped the teacher I am and the teacher I will become in the future.

Sabrina is somebody I will never forget because of her laugh, her smile, her tears, and her determination to teach what she believed to be best teaching practices. She never hesitated to challege our thinking or to push us so our teaching would rise to new levels. I love Sabrina for loving language, for loving the arts, for loving children, and for loving her students! -SABRINA-just say her name to anyone that knows her and what comes to mind?-The epitome, the embodiment, and the essence of a great teacher! Sabrina will always be remembered as," the one that taught me everything I know."

What can I say about Sabrina? I don't think that any words could do justice as to how amazing she was. She was the best teacher I ever had and one of the most incredible women I had the pleasure of knowing. Many people passed through Sabrina's life and I was one of the hundreds, but despite so many people in her life I know that if I walked up to her years after being in the teaching program she would remember my name and give me a big hug. I know this because she cared about each and every person that came into her life and she took the time to get to know us and treat us like unique individuals. She taught me so many things while I was at UCSB and she had such an immense impact on my life. I just completed my first year of teaching and I often found myself thinking "oh no I can't believe I taught that lesson in that way...Sabrina would not be happy" or "oh that lesson was awesome, Sabrina would be so proud". I even talked about her to other staff members at my school and told them how wonderful it could be if she could come and do a seminar at our school. Sabrina touched so many people's lives and gave so much, and I know that all she would ask for in return would be for all of us to continue the fight for education. Sabrina was amazing and helped me so much, words can't express how thankful I am. She will be missed, but she will live in our hearts forever!

Dear Herb and Malaya

Few women are as blessed as Sabrina.

Because she was so aware of the chronic nature of her illness, she lived each and every day to the fullest.

Sabrina was always clear that being Malaya’s mother was the best and most important job of her life. This is a gift that not all mothers appreciate as completely as she did.

Sabrina is also blessed to have a devoted and loving husband, a man who accepted her unconditionally and who respected her for all that she is. Few women can make that claim.

We shared so much of what life is all about - joys and sorrows, disappointments and frustrations, celebrations and the contentment that comes from doing really-really good work, work that makes a positive difference in the world. Sabrina never settled for anything less.

Sabrina will always be my best mentor, my esteemed colleague and dear friend. I shall miss her physical presence in my life dreadfully. However, her wise counsel will always be my reference point, “What would Sabrina do?” Her way of being in the world has always been inspired and inspiring.

I send you both lots of love and lots of love to Auntie Danielle and Grandma Judy too. Ann

I will never forget the first time I met Sabrina. I was sitting in class talking with the people at my group when I overheard Sabrina tell someone in class that she went to high school in Truckee, Ca. My ears perked up because I myself had gone to Truckee High. I immediately went up and introduced myself to her.
Sabrina was THE best teacher I have ever had. What I admired most was her determination, her dedication and her desire to stick up for so many kids.
I just completed my first year of teaching and there was never a day when I did not think of Sabrina and what she would think about my school, my principal and of course my teaching! She is what inspires me to try try and try again and to keep working to become the best teacher that I can be.
I was truly devastated when I heard the news of her passing, but now I know that I need to stay in the teaching profession and be just as determined and dedicated to making public education the best that it needs to be, and for that I thank her!

I wanted to say this today, at Sabrina's memorial, but I couldn't quite get myself on that stage. Here is what is what I intended to share...
Attempting to describe Sabrina Tuyay, someone who has and always will inspire me, is a difficult task. It is not that I am at a loss for words; it is quite the opposite I could go on and on, a little like that pink bunny. There are two things I would like to share as we celebrate Sabrina’s life and how we her students, colleagues and friends will carry on her commitment to education.
First I would like to remind all of us that Sabrina inspired us to be as active outside our classrooms as we are in them. In the turmoil that is public education we, the highly qualified, need to find ways to stand together against policies that threaten our funding, our job security, and the well being of our students. We must work collaboratively to ensure our students are learning what they truly need to know, even if it means we close our classroom doors and teach what we know is right in spite of what current educational policies dictate. It is one of our many responsibilities as educators.

I first met Sabrina 2 years ago this summer. I sat in the first of many classes she would teach, Linguistics, and literally tried to write down every word she said. I felt this need to record every bit of wisdom she shared with us, feeling instantly enlightened by her passion, her experience and knowledge, and most importantly her belief in us, her students. As time passed, we became closer and I frequently approached Sabrina with my newest accomplishments as well as my latest blunders. She was ALWAYS there to listen and to provide feedback.

It is one of these encounters that I would like to share with you today, as we celebrate the incredible ways Sabrina has touched our lives. It was late February in my year in graduate school here at UCSB. I was over halfway through “the program” and in the midst of a meltdown. I felt like everything was falling apart, that I could see all the pieces around me but couldn’t quite put them back into place. For the first time, I doubted whether I had it in me to do the job that I love. It was Sabrina who helped me to find my way back. As I stood crying in the hallway of Phelps Hall she told me something along the lines of, “If this is what you choose to do with your life, if you want to be a teacher then do not let anyone dissuade you. I know you have what it takes, I know you will be a great teacher.” She offered a lot of support as usual, volunteering to observe me in my student teaching placement and generally insisting that giving up just was not a viable option and that she would do whatever it took to ensure I stayed in this profession.

That was truly the first and the last time I questioned whether I was capable of accomplishing the tremendous task of being a teacher. Quite simply I love it too much, and I know how important a job it is. In that moment Sabrina walked the talk, she showed me what could happen when we believe in our students. By telling me she believed in me she empowered me to believe in myself. I take that lesson with me everyday in my own teaching.

As we remember and celebrate Sabrina Tuyay let us continue to be inspired by her, let us cherish her relentless passion for education, her hysterical sarcasm, and her unending high standards for each and every one of us. Let us believe in ourselves and in each other and let us show our students that we believe in them everyday that we are teachers.

I was in the Teacher Education Program 10 years ago. I knew Sabrina as a graduate student when she was pregnant. We were not in contact after I left UCSB, so to me Sabrina is frozen in time as a pregnant grad student. Sabrina is forever a strong, wonderful woman with the spirit to complete a Ph. D. while pregnant, and then raising a young child.

Unfortuantely, I only stayed in the teaching profession a couple of years before concluding this was not right for me. So, I'm on to a new career now.

Then this morning I got a bagel from Noah's. I read the name tag of the girl behind the counter, then looked at her face, because there are few Oriana's in this world. When I had a chance to catch her eye I asked, "I used to be your teacher, didn't I?" She looked at me and asked, "Krystal?" (It was an Open School where teachers went with their first names... in my case middle name)

Oriana was one of my fifth graders ever so long ago. She told me she just completed her freshman year at Columbia and was home for the summer.

This is what Sabrina dedicated her life to, and what the idealistic teacher in me will always hold dear. Bless them, our kids grow up to be wonderful good grown-ups, and it's a privilege to have helped them along their way.

Thank you Sabrina for being one of the people to help me contribute to children's lives.

Sabrina is my hero. If I ever teach, it's because she showed me how. If I ever brave a seemingly impossible situation, it's because she led the way. If I ever challenge the powers that be, it's because she made me ask why.
In this current climate of education, sometimes I would need a dose of her realism to bring me back to what matters: my students. It is so easy to go with the flow and do what you're told by administrators and policy makers. Yet, she would always remind me that we, as professionals, know what's best for our students and it is our mission to offer it to them.
I was a mere student among thousands of whom she has inspired exponentially. Yet by sending an email, she was back in my life as if I was back in Phelps. I emailed with questions, "can you believe this crap?"s and stories for years after I completed my Lit Assessment. She knew my students' names, my struggles, my triumphs. She knew it because she taught me everything I know about teaching and A LOT of what I know about life.
I still feel the urge to email her and tell her how sweet Herb's, Ann's, and everyone's speeches were at her memorial. I want to tell her how proud I am of her for facing her illness and not letting it get the best of her. And I want to thank her for making me not only the teacher I am today, but the person I am today.

Herb, Malaya, and family of Sabrina-
It is somewhat ironic that there are no words to express the sorrow over losing Sabrina, as words were her work and her gift. She was, simply, an amazing woman. She was my teacher in the teacher education program in the 1998-9 school year. As a fellow Carpinterian, we connected after graduation, and I visited your house several times as we sat on your living room floor and she helped me map out my first summer school curriculum. I taught in Carpinteria right out of teaching school, and we rolled our eyes together at some of the blunders of the Carpinteria school district. We kept in touch frequently, and I heard about Malaya going to kindergarten at Aliso, and
eventually her move to San Roque. We communicated mostly about education, and I have printed out in a file nearly all the emails she sent to me, because most of what she ever said or wrote to me was so insightful an valuable. When I had my first child and then my second, she was able to share advice with me not only as a fellow educator, but also as a mother. You certainly don't need me to tell you that she was devoted to you, Malaya. Her dedication to her child and her family was complete. She certainly had a passion for learning, for education, for advocating for those students without a voice, but her love and devotion to you was paramount. Family was most definitely first. I learned that from her as well.
Last school year I was teaching at Canalino in a job share position with my teaching partner Caryn Parker. Sabrina helped us problem solve an intense classroom makeup, and then went so far to volunteer her time every Monday to help with writing. Our students came to love and respect her as we did. Through her student teachers, Sabrina has reached and will continue to reach thousands of students. It is some small comfort that her incredible knowledge, passion, and insight will live on. For those of us that knew her as an educator, colleague, and friend, her legacy is unparalleled.

Whenever I hear someone say "Sabrina" I immediately think of the only real Sabrina that I know. This is a woman who made me want to be a teacher and a good one. This past year I taught at a very high income school where test scores meant bragging rights at the local country club. Test scores meant everything and thus the treatment of the teachers was based on how well the students did on their tests. Everyday I never knew if I was going to get called into the principal's office to get haggled for not having the highest scores on the latest test. I nearly quite the profession because I thought that I was no good due to the fact that my students didn't have the highest scores. What kept me going to work everyday and finishing off the year was Sabrina saying, "The world doesn't need anymore mediocre teachers, we need great teachers." I wanted to give up and just punch the clock until June, but instead I chose to be great. I thought about Sabrina so many times, even went back into all the papers and texts she wrote that guided me through so many of my late night assignments when I was in the program. She was the perfect example of someone who was great, a role model for all teachers. She was passionate about teaching teachers and in return it made me passionate about my teaching.I will miss her so much and I wish her family the best of luck.

Malaya,
Your mother was a very special person. Like so many others have said, she touched my life and made it better. She noticed when I was discouraged and encouraged me. She was an example that I strive to emulate. She was strong when others would have complained. She was encouraging when others were critical. She laughed when others might have cried. And she was a Great Teacher. I feel honored to have learned from her. She will be remembered and live on through all the lives she touched. You should be so proud to have such a mother.

Sabrina Tuyay was by far the most inspirational and motivating teacher I have ever had. She pushed me, as a teacher in training, to the brink. I often wrote lesson plans for her that were 30 or more pages long and single spaced, critiquing every aspect of a single 30 minute Language Arts lesson. As hard as I worked, I appreciated every minute of it, because never before had I felt as if I were doing something more important. Sabrina read every last word of every single one of our 90 or so lesson plans and gave personal and specific feedback throughout them in a timely manner (on post-it notes :) - always respectful and inspiring, never writing all over our hard work). Where she found the time I will never know, and I'll never be able to thank her enough. Also, she showed up everyday and was there for us, even when it seemed extremely hard for her. If she thought that understanding our role as an educator so completely was that important, I knew it had to be. Almost everyday over the past year I have thought of Sabrina as I taught. I thank her in large part for the confidence I felt during my first year of teaching. She pushed me to never settle, and to always try to do more for my students. I have often referred to her as my Jiminy Cricket; my teaching conscience. Sabrina really inspired me, and continues to inspire me, with the noble fight that she has fought for us all throughout her amazing career, in order to help others and make education all that it can be. She was an amazing and selfless women; a true expert in her field. I feel extremely blessed to have known and been educated by such an incredible teacher and person. Love, Jessica Jozwik (MST, TEP 2003-2004).

I was amazed when I heard news of Sabrina's death, because I had just been in class with her less than two weeks before. Five of us in PhD programs who had chosen to specialize in Teacher Education had a discussion course with her in which we talked about our internships and teaching in general. Having a less-structured class in which we could disucss a broad array of issues with a practiced teacher and teacher educator turned out to be a real gift. I think that these discussions reminded me that teaching IS political, which means that we can and do alter "the system" when we teach, but also that we need to carefully consider the long-term ramifications of our actions. It also means that we need to stay active politically, and to fight for the kinds of classroom environments that we believe do the greatest justice to our students. Sabrina taught us to question assumptions about teaching and about students, to look at and work with what's there, rather than with ideals, and to demand the best and most qualified teachers and educational systems for our students.

Dear Malaya,

I just wanted to follow up on our brief phone conversation with this email.

I just couldn’t bring myself to get up and share at the service two weeks ago. But, I do want to share these thoughts with you.

Your Mom was my friend. Even though we had grown apart over the years, we were close in college. Our college days are long behind us, but there are warm and fond memories.

Your Mom was my friend and my sister. We were charter members in the sorority, Gamma Phi Beta. So, even before your Mom finished school and took on the world of education, she was a ground-breaker. Your Dad will say that the only thing that he remembers from your Mom’s sorority days was the “L” sign for “loser”.

One of my favorite “remies “ – remembrances – is our annual Easter Brunch. Your Mom had a great studio apartment in “the house” that was located right off the street, and had a great patio. Every year we would cook up Easter favorites, coffee cake, bacon, etc., and eat out on the patio. One year, our cooking just wasn’t up to par. So we did what only Sabrina would think of doing. We decided not eat those “nasty” eggs. Somewhere in the world, there is a guy who may be wondering how scrambled eggs got into the back of his truck.

We used to barbeque shark, make ranger cookies, and cook fried rice and won tons, and ice cream by the pint on a nightly basis – and wonder why we couldn’t loose weight.

Shopping at Lucky’s, which is now Albertson’s grocery store, was always an adventure. By the end of our time, we’d loudly identified most of the “Key Buy” items, and added yet another check/stock boy to our list of acquaintances.

We would drive to church in your Mom’s little red CRX – it seated two, but three of us always managed to crowd in for our Sunday trips to worship. Being the shortest of the three, I was usually the one who would crawl in, with my legs in the trunk space, and my body wedged between the driver and passenger seat.

I was in your Mom and Dad’s wedding, and your Mom was in mine. Ask Grandma Judy or Auntie Danielle about the tissue that I stuffed in my bouquet that, of course, fell to the floor during your parents’ exchange of vows.

Did anyone ever tell you that your Mom went to the beach to lay out in the sun the day before her wedding? She wanted to even out her tan, and ended up with a sunburn the shape of a triangle right in the middle of her chest.

I am sorry that I lost touch with Sabrina. Herb reminded me that I introduced the two of them. It was a blind date that was unfortunate for a Doug Draper, (your Dad, Doug and I all worked at KEYT together), but was the best thing for your Dad and Mom.

More than a decade ago, there was a Santa Barbara visit when four of us were walking along the beach -- your Dad, your Mom, my Alan, and me. Herb and Alan stopped to piddle in the ocean. Sabrina and I just looked at each other and laughed, agreeing that our “boys” would fit into our friendship nicely.

I am sorry that, as adults, we only had blitz encounters -- announcing the birth of you, celebrating Sabrina’s masters (from a distance), acknowledging the sudden passing of my father, the miraculous arrival of Matthew -- we no longer shared much of life with each other.

Although we had grown apart, there was always a comforting thought that we were a phone call away, that there was always next year to be better about sending the Christmas card or make the birthday call. It’s hard to believe that your Mom is gone. But, I am convinced that your Mom is looking down on all of us, and feeling pretty good about the fact that we have been sobered into thinking about how we spend the rest of our days here on earth.

Malaya, I’m so sorry that it’s taken so long for me to send you this email. I’ve been busy producing San Francisco’s Annual Cable Car Bell-Ringing Contest. Maybe you can come and see it next year. It takes place the second Thursday of July. So, for next year, that means it will be on July 13th. Your Dad says that you’ll be doing more traveling now, so I hope that this means that you’ll come to the City to visit Aunt Danielle, and that you’ll also visit with us.

I just want to end with this: While I agree with the scholars and educators who say that your Mom lived her life motivated by a “Carpe Diem!” mindset, I believe your Mom would loudly remind us to, “Laissez les bons temps rouler!”

Sent with love,

Janis Yuen (Gin), who promises not to be a stranger.

Dear Herb and Malaya,
My favorite times with Sabrina were when we met for tea, coffee, lunch, etc in Carp. Sometimes it was between observations for me while down in Carp. Lately it was on my way home from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Meeting at the Coffee Grinder or Chamomille and chatting about everything was great. Sometimes it was about school stuff, but mainly it was about being a good parent and how to go about that. I'm going to be a new parent of two beautiful girls who are 10 and 8 years young. So Sabrina had lots of great insight into creative young minds that are exceedingly intelligent.

We would get really upset at a lot of things. We would look at books of children’s literature that I had bought as souvenirs and discuss them and if we could read them in a public school. Most of all, we would laugh so hard at so many things. Yes, that was the best.

With Love, Margarita

I was in disbelief as I read of Sabrina's death in the alumni newsletter from UCSB's Graduate School of Education. Sabrina and I shared a few classes as we pursued our Master's degrees in 1990 and she was truly a delight to talk with! If I remember correctly, she was attending school part-time and our meetings were sporadic, but she always made me laugh! I remember Sabrina and I talking about the old cartoon, "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," and how her brother(s) used to tease her about that!

Another time Sabrina brought a delicious Chinese chicken salad to an event we had and I couldn't stop raving about it. Soon afterwards, she brought me the recipe and I made it over and over again at home. I still have that recipe! She also gave me a delicious cookie recipe--that woman knew good food!

I am just so sad to read about Sabrina's death. She was great fun and provided me with lots of laughs when I needed them.

I'm grateful I knew her.

3rbPOA First of all, there’s no one else like YOU—your story is unique and you can tell about people, times, and places that only YOU can share.

Why not tell your grandchildren about you….plus their grandparents, great-grandparents, and even their great-great grandparents (that’s

your grandparents)! It’s really about creating a loving, lasting bond—preserving not just life stories, but relationships, for

generations to come.

Of course, you can also give them your own advice about love, work, and how to lead a good life. Here was my grandma’s advice to me: “Be

what you want. If you do something, do it the best you can.” Because it’s my grandma, it means so much more. I’ll always be able to

remember what she said because it was actually written down. What’s your advice for your family? This is your opportunity to write it

Reminiscing is good for you too! Over 100 studies over the last 10 years have found that reminiscing lowers depression, alleviates

physical symptoms (arthritis, asthma), and stimulates the hippocampus where memories are stored in the brain. So consider the great

health reasons for reminiscing too.

iyJ5gT First there is the need to find the real meaning life has for you. This journey we are all on is a varied one, for sure, but there are some similar things we are all going through.

Each of us, in our search for meaning in life, has a vast amount of experience to draw upon. Our struggles and hardship, along with our achievements and blessings, teach us life’s lessons. Your experience, your strength and the hope that endures are part of your unique story — and part of the reason why you should tell your life story.

The second primary reason to tell your life story is to leave your mark. We all want to be remembered. Certainly we want to be remembered for the good we've done and for the significant accomplishments in our lives. There is satisfaction in a life well-lived. Living a life fully... richly experiencing what it means to be alive and involved in helping others is a great thing. To share with others who you are, what you are about and what you believe in is passing on some very valuable personal history.

FYvuez I put together a show of about forty photographs at a frame shop. I invent a unique way of mounting the pictures, flush on aluminum with a spacing device to move the picture out from the wall. This way of framing has never been done before, at least in our area. (Now I see it all the time on styrafoam board.) The show is a wild success with about a hundred people at the opening including the former director of the Playhouse 90 series on TV (a teacher in my department) who loves my work and brings the Chairman of the Art Department with him.

According to the old saying, "some people are born to greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." Greatness was certainly thrust upon Rosa Parks, but the modest former seamstress has found herself equal to the challenge. Known today as "the mother of the Civil Rights Movement," Parks almost single-handedly set in motion a veritable revolution in the southern United States, a revolution that would eventually secure equal treatment under the law for all black Americans. "For those who lived through the unsettling 1950s and 1960s and joined the civil rights struggle, the soft-spoken Rosa Parks was more, much more than the woman who refused to give up her bus seat to a White man in Montgomery, Alabama," wrote Richette L. Haywood in Jet. "[Hers] was an act that forever changed White America's view of Black people, and forever changed America itself."

From a modern perspective, Parks's actions on December 1, 1955 hardly seem extraordinary: tired after a long day's work, she refused to move from her seat in order to accommodate a white passenger on a city bus in Montgomery. At the time, however, her defiant gesture actually broke a law, one of many bits of Jim Crow legislation that assured second-class citizenship for blacks. Overnight Rosa Parks became a symbol for hundreds of thousands of frustrated black Americans who suffered outrageous indignities in a racist society. As Lerone Bennett, Jr. wrote in Ebony, Parks was consumed not by the prospect of making history, but rather "by the tedium of survival in the Jim Crow South." The tedium had become unbearable, and Rosa Parks acted to change it. Then, she was an outlaw. Today she is a hero.
Rosa McCauley

PQ3chq Parks was born Rosa McCauley in Tuskegee, Alabama. When she was still a young child her parents separated, and she moved with her mother to Montgomery. There she grew up in an extended family that included her maternal grandparents and her younger brother, Sylvester. Montgomery, Alabama, was hardly a hospitable city for blacks in the 1920s and 1930s. As she grew up, Rosa was shunted into second-rate all-black schools, such as the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls, and she faced daily rounds of laws governing her behavior in public places. Ms. magazine contributor Eloise Greenfield noted that Rosa always detested having to drink from special water fountains and having to forgo lunch at the whites-only restaurants downtown. Still, wrote Greenfield, "with her mother's help, Rosa was able to grow up proud of herself and other black people, even while living with these rules.... People should be judged by the respect they have for themselves and others, Mrs. McCauley said. Rosa grew up believing this."
Jim Crow
JimCrow@email.com

WxpWqS The Jim Crow rules for the public bus system in Montgomery almost defy belief today. Black customers had to enter the bus at the front door, pay the fare, exit the front door and climb aboard again at the rear door. Even though the majority of bus passengers were black, the front four rows of seats were always reserved for white customers. Bennett wrote: "It was a common sight in those days to see Black men and women standing in silence and silent fury over the four empty seats reserved for whites." Behind these seats was a middle section that blacks could use only if there was no white demand. However, if so much as one white customer needed a seat in this "no- man's land," all the blacks in that section had to move. Bennett concluded: "This was, as you can see, pure madness, and it caused no end of trouble and hard feeling." In fact, Parks herself was once thrown off a bus for refusing to endure the charade of entry by the back door. In the year preceding Parks's fateful ride, three other black women had been arrested for refusing to give their seats to white men. Still the system was firmly entrenched, and Parks would often walk to her home to spare herself the humiliation of the bus.
